Document Summary
Looking glass-self: other people often serve as a mirror in which we see ourselves. We often come to know ourselves by imagining what other signi cant people think about us and include that into our self concept. Apes: those who have been raised in isolation were not capable of self recognition in mirror. Only capable when exposed to other apes. What we think what other people think of us don"t always match with what they really think about us. Example found that research participants cannot actually explain why they do what they do. Argues that introspection leads us to be confused about ourselves. Study: attitudes towards objects didn"t correlate with their behaviours towards the objects. Ex: when he asked participants why they felt or behaved the way they did their attitude and behaviour no longer matched up. May lead to impairment of self knowledge. It is impossible for us to constantly processing all stimuli all at the same time.
