PSYCO241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Life Studies, Deindividuation, Group Cohesiveness
Document Summary
Timing some cyclists going around track and noticed that when cyclists observed by audience they had faster times than when they cycled alone. Brought kids in and had them wind a line around a fishing wheel as fast as they could (either in groups or alone) Findings: when observed by others, they wound the string around the spool faster. Had people perform very complex math problems either alone or within a group opposite findings: you do better when alone. Modified by zajonc being in the presence of an audience creates arousal and arousal enhances the dominant response. Dominant response: one"s most common or natural response in that situation, usually a very well-learned behavior. Easy task: the task is usually well-learned so one"s dominant response is usually the correct one, the dominant response usually fits the task. Went to a local pool hall and secretly watched a bunch of players play identified good players vs. bad players.
