PSYCO241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Billy Joel, Binge Drinking, Onerepublic
Document Summary
Conformity is the tendency to change our perceptions, opinions or behaviours in ways that are consistent with group norms. This is effected by the presence (real or imaginary) others. Conformity can be good or bad, depending on the context or the behaviour. For example, driving norms are important to follow, but they change depending where you are in the world. In this example, it is important to conform to the norms of a society. The negative connotation regarding conformance could steam from the north american ideals of the independent self, but the reality is that we are all conformists in some way or another. Example: video of japanese prank where group of people walking around a person all falls to the ground, the person also tends to fall to the ground. Conformity can save your life in a dangerous situation. For example if there is a group running and yelling about a tsunami, you"re gonna yell and run too.
