Document Summary

Applied to complex tasks extended in time. Graceful degradation: the fewer resources you have, the poorer the performance will be. Resources consist of chefs, helpers, appliances, implements, space, etc. Meal comes quickly when there is only 1 customer: if you have little demand, everything will be done quicker. Meals are slower when capacity of kitchen is exceeded: as more customers arrive, there will be a gradual degradation, the meals will come slower. Increasing resources generally improves performance: in particular, the restaurant example. Minimal amount of resources to get any performance: must have at least one stove for the food to be produced at a restaurant. At some point, more resources won"t help: doesn"t matter how many extra stoves and chefs you have, it won"t get better always. This means you can trace out a performance-resource function: resources on x-axis, performance on y-axis.
