Document Summary
Being put in a room alone following an unwanted behaviour is an example of a time-out. An advantage of punishment is that it works quickly. Based on research, children should never be spanked. The three-term contingency: also known as the abcs of behaviour. In the presence of a particular antecedent cue or signal, a speci c behaviour will be followed by a certain consequence. Antecedents: include the stimuli, events that precede a behavioural response. These provide the context in which consequences occur. Overt antecedents: stimuli directly observable with your senses. Covert antecedents: internal experiences; not open to observation by others. Immediate antecedents: occur right before a behaviour, it might even overlap with the behaviour. Distant antecedents: stimuli that precede the behaviour by a long time; also can a ect behaviour for a long time. Stimulus control: the extent to which an antecedent stimulus can in uence performance of a speci c behaviour.
