Separating from parents: begins in childhood and accelerates in teen years. Individuation and parenting behaviours: parents facilitate individuation through: Lots of parental support: understanding need for autonomy, maintain emotion bond/closeness, gradually decreased behavioural control i. e. granting more and more autonomy, challenge for parents to give this up a healthy balance needs to be found between parents. Autonomy in adolescence and adolescent: emotional autonomy not having to rely on others (parents) for sense of comfort, reassurance, and security, behavioural autonomy to make own decisions and take responsibility for own actions. In general, positive and well-functioning relationships: majority of parents and adolescents report close, warm, and supportive relations, preceded by similar positive relations in childhood, for certain issues, parents remain influential during adolescence (ex. morals, school/career, safety)
