Psych is fragmented because of its diversity of topics, existing as a pluralistic discipline. Cybernetics was parent of cog science studies adaptive behavior of intelligent agents by feedback & information theory science of communications and automatic control systems in machines and living things. Macy conferences: gatherings of mathematicians, linguist, comp scientists, psychologists, anthropologists who came together to figure out how the human mind works idea that cognition is information processing brought these people together, and needs representation/symbolism. Epistemology: is the investigation of what distinguishes justified belief from opinion. Psychology wasn"t deemed a valid discipline, cog sci was more accepted. Bc of the all or nothing response of an action potential was equivalent to boolean values. Info processing = rule governed manipulation of symbols : helped in understanding of language & problem solving. Connectionist approach: proposed cognitive architecture was different than a computer.
