R SOC355 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Jasper National Park, Cultural Landscape
Document Summary
Explores the history of land use and land use policy in ab. Two levels of analysis (p. 148): material change. Structural, infrastructure development: social change changing aspirations and visions for the province, awareness of issues, attitudes and values. Jasper national park viewed as a pristine, natural landscape. Historically it had less trees, but since we value trees and include them with our vision of natural beauty, there are more trees now. Naturally burned areas are not part of our vision, despite having been part of the landscape for a long time. Rural as natural: rural landscape as a natural landscape, rural activities as those that work with nature, rural people are identified by their knowledge and sensitivity to nature. Thus the discourse values nature and seeks to protect it. Rural as natural resources: a store house of materials for human use, a place to live and work and tame. Must be brought into some condition that can be used by humans.
