REN R110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Herbaceous Plant, Woody Plant, Livestock Grazing Comparison
Document Summary
Flowering plants: types of flowering plants. (i. e. non-flowering plants are not considered in these definitions), wood plants, have persistent stems: shrubs and trees, shrubs: <5m tall, branch near base, trees: >5m tall, single-stemmed, herbs. Are not woody; lack persistent stems: forbs: dicot herbs, graminoids: grasses and grass-like plants. Herbage: all living herbaceous plant material that might be eaten by animals. Browse: the edible portion (i. e. leaves and succulent twigs) of woody plants. Forage: edible material of herbaceous or woody plant origin. Hence it is a general term including edible herbage and browse. Grazing is a type of feeding, in which a herbivore feeds on plants (such as grasses), and also on other multicellular autotrophs (such as algae). They eat leaves, bark, fruits and green stems from plants that are usually high growing woody plants such as shrubs. Stocking rate: the # of animals on a given amount of land over a certain period of time.
