Guest lecture: climate change impacts on the western canadian boreal forest: co2 levels are increasing in the earth"s atmosphere, the world passes 400ppm co2 threshold. 2. ) role of forests in global cycles: uptake and release of co2 (carbon cycle, feedbacks of forests on weather and climate (water and energy) Mitigation: actions to stabilize levels of ghgs in the atm (e. g. co2) to slow down the rate of global climate change. Adaptation: actions to minimize negative impacts of global climate change, and to take advantage of any potential bene ts. Some direct impacts of climatic warming: thawing of permafrost, mainly northern boreal forest and arctic, profound changes to ecosystems. Friday, october 14, 2016: poses problems for existing infrastructure, glacier melting, implications for water supply to the prairies, shorter winter period of frozen ground, poses major challenges for winter access to forested land base and remote communities.
