REN R495 Lecture 6: Erosion Control Jan 24th
Document Summary
Erosion: wearing away of the land surface or soil by water, wind, ice, gravity or other geological agents and anthropogenic forces. Distinguished from weathering, which is decomposition of rock. Organic covers, organic mulches, erosion mats, mulch mats, geotextiles, crimping, rice paper nets, woven jute grass, straw mattressesm grass mulch blanket, burlap, cocnut fiber, brush, eco-covers, recycled paper mats. Divert overland flow (put water into an area suitable for purposes such as forming a wetland or carry a lot of amendments due to runoff) interceptor or diversion ditches. Geotextiles (variable permeability), straw bale fence, other organic and inorganic fences. Pipe and lined slope drains, spillways, flumes, culverts. Line with concrete, rock, gabion mattresses, gabion baskets, sandbags, gravel bags, wood, plastic sheeting, vegetation. Reduce overland flow velocity (reduced energy in the water and mass carried by the water) Terracing (create depressions, slows down), forest slash spread. Hold soil in place for short or long term.
