RLS100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Anomie, Substance Abuse, Differential Association
Document Summary
Favourite or least favourite quotation (and page number): To some extent, deviant leisure is nothing but the activity that exploits this ambivalence. The focus of this chapter is the adverse outcomes of engaging in pastimes that society considers deviant. We begin with a general discussion of the basic meanings and characteristics of leisure and deviance and then suggest several examples: vandalism, gambling, risky health behaviors, and violence in sport. We conclude with explanations for deviance in leisure. (pg. 164) Even though leisure is vitally important to the well-being of individuals and societies, it can also produce harmful outcomes. (pg. 163) If leisure is a condition of personal attitudes, preferences, and values, labeling certain leisure pursuits as harmful is useless. On the other hand, if leisure is a matter of making good choices, labeling certain pastimes as unworthy, and possibly taboo, is possible. (pg. 163) Pastimes that are forbidden by law, custom, or belief are taboo.
