Idea that human society progress in stages, which happens because of change in ideas and how we think. Materialist (marx: changes happen because of the change in the way we do things, instead of just how we think (actions not words) Friedrich engels: the condition of the working classes in england in 1844, was an english son, well off industrialists, owners were exploiting workers, bad work conditions, wanted change. Primitive communism: hunter gatherer, no property, everything is shared. Feudalism: distinct forms of property, ownership and division. Capitalism: distinct forms of property, ownership and division.
