SOC100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Orthodox Marxism, Dominant Ideology, Proletariat
Document Summary
Cont. of chapter 3: culture and culture change. Forces of production : land, factories and machines. How does a society meets its basic needs. Relations of production : the social relation that are formed around the forces of production. Classical marxists : culture as part of the superstructure is merely part of the base. Classical or orthodox marxism: culture, as part of the superstructure, derives from the economic base. Culture is part that which upholds the capitalist society. Neo-marxists deviate from this epiphenomenal understanding of culture by considering the role of dominant ideology. Culture as just a secondary phenomenon because of capitalism. Culture was becoming more important to people"s lives. Dominant ideology : a system of thoughts, knowledge, and beliefs that serves to legitimate and perpetuate capitalism. Pay attention to culture that helps perpetuate the idea of class systems. Society as a whole and how different institutions play a part in keeping it together.
