Document Summary

Race, ethnicity and racism: what is the difference between race and ethnicity, race: refers to a person"s physical characteristics such as bone structure and skin, hair or eye color. Ethnicity: refers to cultural factors including nationality, regional culture, ancestry and language. Phenotype: the observable physical properties of an organism, like the organism"s appearance, development and behavior. An organism"s phenotype is determined by its genotype; the set of genes the organism carries, as well as by environmental influences upon these genes. Racial/religious stereotyping: white converts to islam lose" their white identity. In britain they report being yelled at in the street, called paki" even if they are irish, scottish, welsh. Because they have claimed this religious label, they have in a way lost their white identity and white privilege. Experience racial stereotyping even though they are white. Early in us history (19th century), irish kept a white designation: were referred to as white chimpanzees, white slaves, white negroes".
