SOC100 Lecture 1: SOC100 Lecture 1
Document Summary
Industrial revolution/urbanization (when sociology emerged as a response to this) was the transition to new manufacturing processes in europe and us, in the period from about 1760 to around 1820-1840. Three main changes from the industrial revolution: Wage labour: the worker sells their labour under a formal or informal employment contract. New industrial economy; most people worked in the elds near their homes or they toyed on small scaled manufacturing, ie: sewing. In a generation, tasks that had took months of labour could be done in a matter of days. Many people say this was because of the steam engine. James watt and matthew boulton (birmingham, england 1775); created a steam engine that could do the work of 12 horses by itself. Paper and glass became available to everyone, not just the wealthy. Competition between companies; low pay for high work, unsafe working conditions, cheaply made products.
