Thomas newcomen (1712) created pump for getting water out of mines, machines now doing work people used to do more efficiently. Horsepower vs. using horses comparing machine to nature. Man hour this pump has this much horse power and does job of that much man hours. As 18th century progressed, new ideas and new technology transformed use of energy, created industrial and urbanized country. Made britain wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth, most powerful empire. Coal kick started revolution (transformed country and world) Until then, wood was main source of energy, it supplied fuel for home/industries. Timber demand grew, but was bulky and hard to transport needed coal. Coal provides 3x more energy than wood, harnessed. Digging for coal was dangerous since mines could flood should use pumps. First used horses to drive the pumps, but coal wasn"t extracted as efficiently. Thomas newcomen tried to solve problem of flooding mines.
