Structural functionalist view men and women perform separate and complementary functions and roles that benefit society (parson, bales) Women expected to fulfill expressive roles and men to fill instrumental roles. Conflict theory source of gender inequality is the male monopoly of power (patriarchy) Inequality arose out of rise of private property (engels) Challenge the idea that sex defines gender. War spike women working more, women aren"t inferior, they can perform jobs (ww2) Birth control technologies, acceptance of women"s right to control their birthing. Child-bearing tends to increase gendered inequality within couples, high rates of fertility tend to increase gendered inequality within society. Most stats say women earn 70-80% of what men earn today. Advancement, up to a point. (glass ceiling) The second-shift women in non-standard arrangements, like mommy-track jobs or female job ghettos . Men are supposed to want sex intensely, whereas women are supposed to be passive, almost asexual.
