Soc 100 lecture 28 gender relations. How is gender socially constructed: gender roles in north america, gender role socialization. Homophobia: fear of and prejudice against homosexuality. Parents normally first and most crucial agents of socialization. Other adults, older siblings, mass media, religious institutions, and educational institutions also exert important influence: especially as children age and develop. Gender stereotypes in media video: there are obvious things media teaches about how to be a man or a woman, however, there are also implicit messages, explicit messages about gender from the media: Qualities that are associated with females, there is pressure for men to not possess female-like qualities, males status is a privilege over female status (devaluation of female-like qualities): gender role socialization and social class. Middle-class career oriented women tend to instill egalitarian values into their children about gender: lower-class families are more likely to socialize their children into traditional gender norms.
