Counter cultures arise in direct opposition to the dominant culture. They reject the core values of the dominant culture( anti-vietnam war) Lifestyle and appearances distinguish them from mainstream culture. Illegal and legal counter cultures: goths, mafias, hippies, hells angels. Values abstract qualities considered important by the participants of a culture. Norms- rules or standards of behaviour that are expected of a group or society. Sanctions ways (either positive or negative) to get people to follow norms. Folkways: norms describing basic day to day activities. Things you should not do: picking your nose in public. Mores: things you must not do: crimes with formal punishments, behaviours that can lead to be ostracized. Taboos: deeply held norms that lead to feelings of disgust and revulsion. By which people learn to function in social life . Involving development of changes in a n individual"s sense of self (identity)
