Low self-esteem, depression, unhappiness, anxiety, increased risk of substance abuse, criminal activity, suicide. Actual or threatened violent crimes committed against persons by their current or former spouses, boyfriends or girlfriends. Four patterns of partner violence (1) common couple violence. Conflict gets out of hand (2) violent resistance. Almost always women against men (3) intimate terrorism. Likely to escalate and lead to serious injury. Both partners intimate terrorism by both. Primary cause of homelessness (especially for women) Factors contributing to intimate partner and family violence and abuse. View of women and children as property of husbands. Prevention strategies for violence and abuse in intimate and family relationships: Primary targeted to the general population. Reducing poverty & unemployment, adequate housing, child care, education opportunities. Secondary targeted to families who are at high risk. Public education, parent support, child counselling, treatment, home visits. Shelters, safe houses, restraining orders, treatment of abusers.
