Society allows them to temporarily withdraw while they recuperate (sanctioned deviance) Expectation: person will seek medical advice, adhere to prescribed regimen, and return to normal roles as soon as possible. Stigmatizing effects of being labeled sick (e. g. mentally ill) Medicalization: the tendency to define negatively evaluated behaviours as medical problems in need of medical intervention. Health, health care, and research are affected by wealth, status, and power of the lack thereof.
