Why do people become deviant: objective (positivist) theories fundamentally interested in explaining why people act in particular ways/finding out why people become deviant. Include functionalist, learning and social control theories: so, understanding must be grounded in observation, go out in the real world and observe what we want to understand. Social structure creates deviance, the way society is organized is what results in deviance. Social structures fulfill important functions and these functions ensure social stability (social structures institutions, economy, government, education, the family and also norms, values, expectations, that shape our experiences and interactions with those institutions)
