Document Summary

Deviance we think of negative behaviors (crime, drugs), but is not necessarily the case. 2 ways to identify who is deviant: (1) looking at deviance textbooks and (2) to ask people eg not liking country music doesn"t mean country singers are deviant. Deviance deviating from an accepted norm. (deviance involves violating norms that have been accepted in society. ) Deviance in academic research differs from the dictionary definition it"s not as straight forward: deviance specialists analyze criminal or noncriminal forms of deviance, criminologists: focus exclusively on criminal forms of deviance. Older definitions objective way of determining what is deviant. Contemporary approach: objective claims that the presence of certain characteristics defines deviance. Behaviors or ppl with those characteristics are deviant. Those lacking such characteristics are normal: subjective claim that there is no shared, observable characteristic that can clearly tell us who or what is deviant and who or what is normal. Instead, someone must tell us who is deviant in canadian society.
