When we challenge it, there are backlashes from family, strangers, etc. Goffman"s front stage and back stage theory can hide them, can play with your identity. She thinks that neck and face tattoos are still forms of deviance. Even tho tattoo in diff areas are becoming more popular. Appearance is important: we judge others" appearances, others judge our appearances. Changing our appearance: body projects (shilling, 1993) the ways in which we adapt, change, or control our bodies, things that we can do. But other ppl also influence us as to how our bodies should be. Noteworthy body projects (a) body modification (i. e. , redesigning) e. g. , tattoos; piercings. Illustration of changes over time (b) body size/weight (i. e. , adapting) Pervasive in medicine, media, education, commercial industry, daily interaction.
