Steadily climbing in ranks of one of americas most violent cities, as its economic situation declines, its crime goes up. More gun violence, more people have guns because of lack of police support. Two documentaries, talked at length about importance of people contributing to local economy- tied to consumer and buying power- related to employment and good jobs. When companies pull out of cities, it spells trouble. Weak link between economic conditions and crime rates. High unemployment = higher crime (windsor, ontario- hardest hit canadian cities because of auto industry. Now occupies top three unemployment rates in country, and yet it has crime severity index lower than national average, and during highest time of unemployment, for two years, there were no murders. ) Offence specific? (could be joblessness has greatest influence on opportunistic offences- theft, burglary- and least influence on violent offences. Not satisfying evidence here however. : individual level.
