SOC226 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Cross-Dressing, Behaviorism, Surveillance
Document Summary
Looking for trends in the behaviour: overall data is liquid, fluid not constrained to one form or thing. Surveillance assemblage: auto data collection: purpose varies. Certain companies use it depending on their needs (police, google : data appears by how those companies assemble it. Surveillance threats (police): no single owner of data, dataveillance is more automated. Records are created as soon as it is collected. No human involvement: one common mistake: the assumption that data is being stolen, or leaking ; when really we just give it away without thinking. Digital persona digital you : essentially a model of the individual through the interpretation of the data collection/storage/analysis that the individual releases online, eg. Facebook, twitter, all social media helps develop your online persona: anywhere people can look you up, you create it to reflect yourself, online self vs. offline self.
