Marriage in Canada
A. Marriage involves a high degree of intimacy and sharing.
In North America - a special value is placed on marriage, in that the success of the marriage
relationship generally determines the broader stability and success of that family of
procreation.

B. Factors influencing Marriage and Marital Choice
1. sex ratio within the relevant age groups
2. pressures to extend or shorten the period of formal education
3. variations in the level of economic activity
4. changes in the divorce legislation
5. mass media influences - the good life
6. cultural press - society, community, family and peers
7. fear of aging - fear of loneliness
8. increasing tolerance towards remarriage
C. Marriage Trends in Canada:
1. marriage rates tend to increase during periods of economic prosperity.
2. marriage rates tend to decline during periods of economic uncertainty or depression.
