1. Descriptive Research -
answers questions: what, how, where, and when?
e.g., what are the different family types? how many mothers are working?
when did the divorce rates increase?
2. Explanatory Research - answers the question: why?
e.g., why do married couples tend to remain childless? Why is coha-bitation so popular today?
Why do women postpone marriage today?

2. In contemporary times - Vital Registration system in Canada
Continuous record keeping since 1921.
