Soc 226: september 10, 2015 the family , family research. Families are embedded in culture, which may remain hidden. Culture includes complex and oten contradictory symbols, rituals, and guides about how to act: dynamic system of meanings and symbols. Culture is a tool kit to use in direcing one"s acions (not a blue print or set of rules. ) Families may just do things: not necessarily thinking consciously about what they"re doing, that"s how certain choices ilter downwards. Might have pressure from their families, might not necessarily. The things families do are sill based in underlying beliefs and assumpions: feel safe when with family, although research says a lot of violence happens in the family (with women / children). Implicit theories: pracices, codes, beliefs, and tradiions that shape families daily life: implicit means something that is implied, or only stated vaguely. Taken for granted: theory is a system of ideas used to explain something.
