The ecological indian - shepard krech (1999: he found no evidence of conservation among native americans prior to contact and plenty of evidence demonstrating a lack of conservation, pleistocene overkill. Fur trade and the slaughter of bison in19th century: beaver = extinction. Jared diamond collapse: easter island, mesopotamia, huge stoneheads and no fauna around it, used to be huge forested area, over -cultivation, deforestation, populations collapse b/c removal of nutrients to the area. Soil became salinized: not supported historically, krech argues that the ecological indiana is a western myth based on the myth of rousseau"s. Noble savage: noble savage: view that there"s a belief in innate purity or innocence to non-western ppl and that civilization or western culture seen as inherently depraved. Savage (1991: ellingson - the myth of the noble savae fxns as a meta-spook, voltaire"s response, rousseau never even actually used the term noble savage, he talked about the good savage.
