Sts 200 lecture 4- january 14 th , 2016. It is a latin word stemming from classical rome. It was created to translate the greek word episteme = Knowledge (spending time working hard at something, studying hard to master something). This is not equal to the roman word gnosis arcane, secret knowledge, someone gives to you. Scientia and episteme can be achieved by anyone, and only some people have the capacity to take the time to learn that many things. Wissenschaft (science in germany) systematic, theoretical inquiry not random, organized, structured, rational, understanding the way things are by thinking about the way things work. Social sciences systematic theoretical inquiry into the social world. Scientist --- 1833 a recently constructed name what we"ll be focusing on. Lewontin: various possible elements: science creates tools and gives us leverage over the material world; science and understanding leads to technologies (practical application).
