Document Summary

Sts 200 lecture 10- february 4 th 2016. Read st francis and white (links in syllabus/on eclass) Reason/science is supernatural/divine, and art/techne is natural(ie physical). The gods aren"t made out of matter, so science and technology should not be combined. They don"t think that techne is a logos: theory as lesser form of power: theoria(greek) means distance/looking/spectatorship. When you"re creating a theory about a tree, you"re thinking around it. You"re thinking about why the tree is a tree, and not a cat. Theory has a circular value, it is intrinsicly valuable. Theory is comparable to contemplation; you"re thinking about the truths of the universe. Aristotle"s god thinks about himself, and therefor is a god. There is no goal, theory is valuable just for the sakes of theory. Science is intentionally pointless, which gives a superior value( necessity is associated with slavery): romans tendencies: romans agree that science is pointless, but they saw no value in that.
