Emergent properies that are more than the sum of their parts. Complexity, in this instance, refers to the development of inequality, social straiicaion, and the evoluion of poliical power concentrated in the hands of an elite group people. In social, poliical, and economic systems emerged in part as a result of increasing populaions. When people get together, they can accomplish things that wouldn"t be possible on their own (doing the wave example) and this shows complexity. People are not all doing the same thing though. Some will produce food, others will make tools, ceramic pots, weave, authority igures, and priests/religious igures. Over ime this becomes more ranked these diferent aciviies have diferent value and diferent meanings within society. Labor needs to be organized in order to produce things for public use.
