CMMB 431 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Protein Precursor, Cytoskeleton, Proline
Document Summary
Think about how people use and deploy antibiotics. Motility of the organism changes depending on the temperature. Facultative anaerobe: advantages in tightly packed food (eg. meat) Psychrophilic: likes to grow in cold temperature, if meat is contaminated with listeria, the bacteria can keep growing in that condition. Listeria is a gi pathogen, so it is acid tolerant. May grow in salty meats or humus because it is salt tolerant. People don"t often cook vegetables, but even if transmission is low this way it is still a good way of bacterial transmission. Listeriosis can be a self limiting thing. Gi illness, involving fever diarrhea and vomiting. Resolves by itself because its self limiting. Most damaging effect is the spontaneous abortion in pregnant women, this is why doctors don"t recommending some things. High risk individuals need a lower dose of the bacteria to acquire listeriosis. Newborns: case fatality rate depending on the cohort being studied.
