The only known reservoir for bordetella is humans, it doesn"t have an environmental reservoir so it spreads by human-human contact. Dtp3 vaccines that have coverage for diptheria, tetanus (caused by clostridial species) and pertussis. Whole cell vaccine reduced incidence of disease initially but some side effects were observed (eg. sore arms) Acellular vaccines involve puri ed toxins from the pathogen. Low incidence of whooping cough ongoing now in canada. Alum is a metal (aluminum) hydroxide that is added to vaccines. Contain different proteins isolated from the pathogen. Used because side effects are less severe than historic vaccines. 85% ef cacious meaning you might still get the cough but it will be less severe. Herd immunity: some people have really good immune response, which reduces rate of transmission. The reason why you get vaccinations is to protect other people, especially children.
