The social production of meaning through sign systems (o"brien and szeman 64) How does representations construct social reality? : media representation play a role in our values, media construct messages of what we should think about the world. Media representation does not occur after an event representation is not constitutive after an event (hall: hall makes the point that things exist after discourse and sign systems. Things acquire meaning when we give them names, and when we represent them. Process: sign systems, language, mechanics of sign systems, values and ideologies: what meanings circulate. Interest in why words means what they do: key players, sassure: developed semiotic theory, semiotics, signifiers, anything that conveys information to others who. Idea that meaning is situated within culture understand it based on a system of codes and conventions. That they have learned or unconsciously internalized a members of a certain culture: signs produce meaning.
