Working class nationalism in continental europe and the ability to wage all out war: thesis: multitudes of working people developed a national consciousness in the nineteenth century as they gained a sense of self. As such they became fodder for the cannons of war. Reactionary middle class nationalism: napoleon disallowed and disrupted many nation"s individuals cultures, and the people of these nations greatly resented this. As a result, napoleons conquests spurred a new nationalism in the occupied nations, particularly in germany and italy. Napoleonic code- break with traditional authority: abolition of feudal and church courts, true crimes (not by superstition, religious freedoms, individual rights, equality before the law, innocence until proven guilty, secular education, equal taxation. Intensification of the industrial revolution: age of steam 1830 , oligopolistic production and trade, working class sense of numbers. Britain (major industries: cotton, wool, coal, iron steel, overseas trade. Western europe: france, coal and iron, cotton, silk, overseas commerce, germany.
