KNES 323 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Umbilical Cord, Reflex Bradycardia, Sedation
Document Summary
Colostrum secretion- very high fat content, yellowish, high nutrient value to the baby. Increased blood flow to uterus, breasts, kidneys, and skin. Lower in lower body to pressure and flow of uterus. Low hct and hb, resulting in anemia due to pregnancy. High blood flow and filtration rate, low osmotic pressure. High amino acid secretion and high glucose excretion in urine (can"t reabsorb it all). Renin, angiotensin, aldosterone increase (causes high sodium and water retention) Decrease in gi motility. (high absorption, but leads to constipation, reflux, heartburn) First stage causes rise in sv and co (pain related) Second stage larger co increase (not pain related) Immediate pp period (rise in co, associated with reflex bradycardia) Hypoxia, stimuli, cold skin trigger first breath, inflating alveoli. Four shunts: placenta, ductus venosus, foramen ovale, ductus arteriosus. Ovale doesn"t have to seal, as it usually stays closed due to pressure. Closure of foramen ovale due do low pulmonary resistance.
