Age at menarche: figure 15. 8, menarche refers to the first menstrual period, and the age at which menarche occurs is the most commonly reported maturity indicator of female adolescence. In girls, it starts at about 9 or 10 and peaks at about age 12 growth in height stops by about age 16 on average. In boys, the acceleration begins at about 10-11 years, peaks at 14 years, and growth in height stops by about age.
