KNES 372 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Anatomical Terms Of Motion, Spondylolisthesis, Palpation
Document Summary
Lbp is the leading cause of disability in the world affecting both the general population and athletes. It can also have other long-term consequences: clear mechanism of injury/pain often cannot be identified, making lower back pain tricky. Commonly characterized as non-specific because often we are unsure of the mechanisms and causes behind the problem: complex combination of anatomical, physical, lifestyle, psychological, neurophysiological, social, and genetic factors. Painful: diagnosis history, clinical tests (strength/flexibility/etc. , best treatment is to try to maintain normal activity level (walking, etc. Usually starts with mechanical back-pain and in sports that contain excessive extension of lower back (ex: ballet and tennis). Lack of studies on lower back pain prevention. Some on select populations but no rcts on this yet: risk factors: improper technique, posture (ex: hyper lordosis), previous back injury, excessive flexion, extension, rotation loads, etc, prevention: improve movement control and movement quality!
