S/s = nausea, vomiting, altered mental status, seizure, coma, death. > 30 c: external risk factors: cold weather, immersion in rain and wind, wet clothing. Internal risk factors: low body fat, age, lack of sleep, fatigue, previous cold injury, and some chronic diseases: prevention strategies: know the risks, assess how cold it is, identify who are in higher risk, plan ahead! Can also use anti- inflammatory medications, analgesics & antibiotic therapy. Especially hypothermia: external risk factors = temperature, wetness, wind, inadequate clothing, tight boots. Internal risk factors = hypothermia, female sex, nicotine use, low body fat, poor fitness, previous cold injuries, diabetes.
