PSYC 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Belief, Hypertension, Procrastination
Document Summary
Coping efforts to master, reduce, or tolerate the demands created by stress. Self-indulgence: eating, smoking, drug use, shopping, television, internet use. Indulgence may be fine as a short-term distraction. Problem arises if it gets out of control. Negative self-talk counterproductive: can lead to depression. Self-delusion (defensive coping: avoidance, wishful thinking, related to poor health and delays in solutions. Depressant that slows brain activity and decreases inhibitions: increases some behaviours that are normally under control. Physiological effects of alcohol vary depending on the amount of alcohol, and the gender and weight of the user. Treatment programs for people with drinking problems: may be psychological or medical. The goal of treatment programs is abstinence although a few therapists believe limited, non-problem drinking is possible. Healthful coping: not correlated with intelligence, positively correlated with mental and physical health and success. Change how you think about the stressful situation.
