Indian government got a lot of condemnation from around the world because they thought it was unnecessary. Inside india, a lot of people didn"t care. Since india had thrown off the british, they thought why should the portuguese have this little piece too. Company didn"t set out to govern the territory, it was to set out their business interests. Results of conflict gave them land to govern. Initially, british didn"t set out to govern anything, but ended up doing so. For the rest of india, they had the idea that british would be governing. Indian political world was used to having an emperor, so having a king fit into that pattern. Lesser kings (princes) come in and submit to the emperor. Princes were able to control their own area but had an obligation this is how feudal system works, by obligation.
