We know that stereo typing occurs when we exaggerate oversimplified images of the characteristics of social categories. We also know that racism is the combination of prejudice (unfavourable, generalized and rigid beliefs applied to all members of a group) and discrimination (practices that deny groups equal access to societal rewards). Discrimination = physical action of racism, the doing of things. Racism = the combination of prejudice and discrimination. A thorough review of this slide show information will enable students to: explain how race is a social construct, define types of racism, explain how racist behaviour has changed over time, discuss explanations for racial crimes. In the 19th and 20th centuries, however, it came to signify groups that were distinguished biologically. *we know that the term race did not begin with science, but actually predates science. Darwin suggested that people possessed genetic material and were able to adjust to their environment (or not).
