Document Summary

Biosecurity: a set of management practices designed to prevent introduction and spread of infectious diseases and to maximize disease resistance (i. e. through vaccination) All agriculture sectors have different biosecurity standards created by cfia. Recommendations are designed to educate industries about biosecurity, present an approach to design farm-based biosecurity plans and provide rationale and strategies to carry them out. National standards have been specifically designed for each sector b/c management practices, risks and requirements for product export are sector specific. Dairy cattle industry is challenged from biosecurity stand point b/c it isn"t "all-in all-out", unlike poulty, pig and aquaculture systems in canada. Important to note, that one of the goals of biosecurity is to reduce exposure to pathogens, so after the introduction of biosecurity standards you cannot reverse it because the animals have not built immunity to pathogen. Manage: prevent spread of pathogens among livestock within a farm. Contain: prevent spread of pathogens between farms of across animal populations.
