Need to look at normal behavior as well: lions behave normally if there"s an abundance of prey, chimpanzees in tanzania in open country are totally diferent than their behavior in jungle environment. Abnormal behavior does not mean reduced welfare but can be an indicator. Highly dangerous to draw the conclusion that abnormal behavior means reduced welfare. Can"t seclude themselves, build a nest, etc: puing ight rubber rings on lambs tails, and calves and cows tails. Lambs showed a lot of pain and cows showed very litle. A cain terrier, it was said that the dog sat on the man"s grave every day. Greif: quite diicult to monitor in a lab. There may be states that animals experience that humans don"t: e. migraing geese.
