02/05/2013 (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) Intense and/or sudden (dropping a bucket, looming stimulus, sudden entry into a pen, etc. ) Novel (food of strange colour, white line on road, plastic bag moving, etc. ) Predator-like (canids, large aerial predators, snakes, etc. ) Stimuli associated with social situations (approach of dominant animal, etc. ) Behavioral indicators of fear are fairly well understood. Have aversive experiences so they can avoid being frightened. Specialized fibres (a-delta and c) project to dorsal horn. May be guarding behavior (protects painful site) May be sparing behavior (animals does not use the painful limb) Acute pain: resulting from tissue damage: may be caused by an injury (a bruise, cut/abrasion, surgical intervention, etc. ), an infection causing inflammation (mastitis, joint infection, etc. ) or a metabolic disease (colic, gout, etc. ) Long-lasting acute pain: due to tissue damage, but damage is permanent and so is the pain: might be caused by tibial dyschondroplasia in chickens, various arthritic-like conditions, etc.
