Lecture 3 equus caballus = the domestic horse. Horse classifications: pony, light (warmblood) and draft (coldblood) depending on size, weight and build, riding, racing, driving, jumping or utility depending on use. Horse breeds: group of horses with a common ancestry that breed true to produce common characteristics such as function and conformation, >300 breeds, have an association with a studbook and breeding records. Senses any of the faculties by which stimuli from outside or inside the body are received and felt, as the faculties of hearing, sight, smell, touch and equilibrium. Improves depth perception because information sent to both sides of the brain (stereoscopic) Depth perception/judging distance: animals with eyes on the sides of the head rely on, the relative size of an object, the shadow it creates, the movement of it relative to distant non-moving objects. Accommodation: the lens of a horse is shaped such that distance objects are in focus.
