ANSC 3080 Lecture 22: Fertilization
Document Summary
Start to move through cervix only during estrus. Internal mucosa and lamina propria well developed in the infundibulum and ampulla. Posses ciliated epithelium (under control of e2 beat and move uid towards the uterus. Secretory cells (peg cells) secrete nutrients for oocyte, and antimicrobial. During estrus e2 act to changes mucus composition. Forms strands or privledge pathways pp to allow sperm to pass. After ovulation, p4 return mucus to acidic barrier. Effective sperm transport requires contractions of the female repro tract. Mating -> nervous stimulation -> posterior pituitary gland > oxytocin (milk ejection) > increased contraction of uterus/ oviduct favoured by high ration e2. Ejaculated spermatozoa for domestic species much be capacitated in female tract. Loss of surface proteins (acquired during epidydmal transit) reorganization of plasma membrane lipid composition. Bull: effect freeze/ thaw or high ionic strength medium/ heparin. Following capacitation require intact acrosome for acrosome reaction during fertilization. Motility is important for nal approach to oocyte (hyperactiviation)
